Golden Week

October 1 is China’s National Day, which starts Golden Week that lasts until October 7.

National Day is the most important national holiday – it commemorates the proclamation of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 by Mao Zedong. It is a holiday independent of the Chinese lunar calendar and is celebrated every year on October 1.

The festivities begin with the ceremonial raising of the Chinese national flag in Beijing’s Tian’anmen Square. This is followed by a grand parade with the armed forces and state dinners. The evening ends with a spectacular fireworks show.

The celebration lasts for 7 days – many companies and factories do not work during this time, and Chinese people use the free days to travel around the country and visit their relatives. Golden Week is a time to relax, travel and spend time with loved ones.

From October 1 to 7 most companies and

factories are closed. It is difficult to contact shipping companies, banks and ports.
